Sinus Infection Home Remedies - "Some Practical Solutions"

!±8± Sinus Infection Home Remedies - "Some Practical Solutions"

Overview

There are thousands upon thousands of sinus infection home remedies out there, ranging from the hair of a toad & tail of a newt, to a number of practical solutions.

All these practical remedies are aimed at:
Easing discomfort. Relieving congestion. Curing sinus headaches. Eliminating all the other nasty symptoms associated with both acute sinusitis (sudden onset), and chronic sinus infections (long-lasting and recurrent).

This article will focus on a number if proven, time-tested sinus infection home remedies that not only work, but also carry health care professional endorsement. Traditional ethnic medicine and folk remedies will be covered in detail in another article.

Home Care Medication

The first point we'd like to stress is that indiscriminate use of over-the-counter (OTC) medications could be harmful to your health. In fact, the wrong combination and dosage can be downright dangerous, and sometimes even life threatening!

If you must treat yourself, for Pete's sake, ask your pharmacist for help and read the instructions! (Sorry for nagging).

Better still, consult your doctor before committing to you medication regimen.

Here's a tip:
Beware of using OTC decongestants for a blocked sinus, and if you are allergy prone, limit the use of store-bought antihistamines during your sinus infection home remedy program.

Decongestant Strategies

Hot Showers
The simplest approach is to take two or three long, hot, steamy showers a day and to breathe through your nose while doing so if possible.

This will help loosen the disgusting yellow or green puss/mucous mixture in your nasal passages and, to a lesser extent, it will also help you cough up some of the phlegm blocking your chest.

Steam Tents and Steam Vaporizers
If you're a one-shower a day person or if you want something with a bit more punch, do the following:
Use a good quality steam vaporizer, or alternatively fill a decent size bowl with boiling water. Add a teaspoonful of mentholated preparation such as Vicks Vapo-Rub or a dash of pure menthol extract or eucalyptus oil, and stir well. Lean over the bowl/vaporizer and cover your head and shoulders with a towel to prevent steam from escaping. Inhale the steam (through your nose if possible), for at least ten minutes. Repeat 2-4 times a day - This is a highly recommended step in your sinus infection home remedy program.
Thin the Mucous
Expectorants will help by thinning mucous deposits, and that will allow you to clear your respiratory passages more easily.

Important note: Overdosing with expectorants can induce some nasty side effects.

A tried and tested natural expectorant is apple cider vinegar. A couple of spoonfuls dissolved in water and sweetened with honey will do wonders for you.

Stay Hydrated
Drinking the equivalent of at least 8 glasses of water a day is a fine tactic worth including in your campaign, because it helps to thin out mucous secretion.

Apart from that, it's a healthy step in the right direction and an excellent habit to cultivate.

Become a 'tea-aholic'... There is nothing better than plain, old-fashion hot tea to help relieve symptoms. This can be taken with or without milk and sugar. If you don't use sugar, try a teaspoonful of honey instead.

Sinus Flush
Nasal irrigation has been practiced in India for centuries as one of the disciplines of yoga. There are no harmful side effects, and what's more important, using sinus irrigation systems can be of enormous benefit to the acute sinus sufferer.

In addition, people prone to repetitive chronic sinusitis who practice sinus irrigation daily, invariably find that it improves quality of life and reduces the use of medication, including antibiotics and corticosteroids.

Most health care professionals and therapists wholeheartedly endorse adopting nasal irrigation as part of your personal hygiene practice. At the very least, this practice should be included as an essential part of every sinus infection home remedy program.

The simplest technique for a sinus flush is to snort lukewarm water from cupped hands, however this is not the most efficient way to do it.

A more effective method is to use a saline solution mixed with sodium bicarbonate as a buffering agent, and to ensure that the solution goes in one nostril and out the other.

Better yet, if you can prevent the mixture from draining down your throat and can also overcome the gagging reflex, spitting it out the mouth is best.

Employ a little pressure and pinch the other nostril closed. That way the solution tends to infiltrate the sinus cavities as well. Not only does it clean out the sinuses, but it also helps to flush away residual muck left behind by postnasal drip.

This is a rather challenging, more advanced variation of this technique, known in yoga as "Vyutkrama Kapalbhati".

A typical home recipe for an isotonic solution consists of half a liter (1 pint) of warm water, 5 milliliters (1 teaspoon) of salt and optionally, another 5 milliliters of baking soda.

There are a number of readily available nasal flushing appliances, such as the Tiki Pot, the Neti Pot (Neti is Sanskrit for "nasal cleansing", by the way), together with a number of more expensive electrical irrigation devices.

If you can't get your hands on one of the above immediately, snip a corner off a Ziploc bag, and use that. If gravity isn't enough to push the mixture through, you can gently squeeze the bag in order to help things along.

Treat the Sinus Pressure Headache
Ibuprofen, (e.g. Motrin, Advil, etc.), Aspirin and acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol), all help to reduce pain and inflammation caused by a sinus attack. However, if you suffer from chronic acid indigestion or heartburn, stick to Tylenol.

Oil of Oregano For Toe Nail Fungus and Other Remedies

!±8± Oil of Oregano For Toe Nail Fungus and Other Remedies

One of the most common cures for the condition is oil of oregano for toe nail fungus infection. The reason is that although natural remedies still need to be scientifically validated, a lot of herbal experts seem to agree about the useful properties of oregano. There are also a host of other natural remedies that may be as good as oil of oregano. Here's what you need to know about oil of oregano and other natural solutions to toe nail fungus.

Oil of Oregano

Oil of oregano contains carvacrol. This is believed to be the plant ingredient that can actively work against fungi. Oil of oregano has also been found to be antibacterial and antiseptic. Oil of oregano can be applied directly on the infected nail. Not all sources however agree on how much should be used and how often it should be applied. Some users simply use it twice a day for an unlimited number of days until the infection clears. Others however point out a prescriptive period of only a few weeks. Users are also cautioned about the use of oil of oregano. It may not be good for pregnant women or those who have an iron deficiency problem.

The oil can also be combine or mixed with other oils. Some common combinations include olive oil and tea tree oil. Again, different sources offer different application tips. Some alternative oils and remedies may be mixed with oil of oregano. Other sources however advise alternating the remedies separately.

Other Possible Remedies

There are other options. Oil of oregano for toe nail fungus isn't your only hope. There are a couple of other possible remedies. These include:

- Vinegar- As some may now, vinegar is antiseptic. It can also work on a variety of infections including those caused by fungi. You can use apple cider or cane vinegar. You can apply this remedy without diluting it directly on the affected nail. An alternative would be to soak your nail on a basin with equal portions of vinegar and lukewarm water.

- The Tea Tree Oil- This natural remedy is as popular as oil of oregano. It also has strong antifungal and antiseptic properties. It is in fact so strong that concentrated amounts of tea tree oil may cause skin irritation. You should therefore settle for a diluted preparation. Tea tree oil can be applied directly to the infected nail.

- Vicks Vapor Rub- This particular remedy isn't easy to explain. In fact, there are very few explanations on why Vicks can work well on nail fungus. It has been suggested that the natural components of Vicks Vapor Rub are possibly good toe nail fungus remedies.

It is important to remember though that natural remedies rarely have standard instructions for application. You therefore have to try a remedy at your own risk.

Natural Treatment - An alternative to home made remedies would be natural products. There are a couple of products available online or in health stores that contain 100% natural ingredients. Manufacturers of these products offer some instructions for proper application.

Vicks Cool Mist and Warm Mist Humidifiers - A Brief Overview

!±8± Vicks Cool Mist and Warm Mist Humidifiers - A Brief Overview

Vicks Cool Mist & Warm Mist Humidifiers offer an array of humidifiers for large and small areas. The health benefits bring relief to people suffering from allergies, colds and asthma. The Vicks V4500 room humidifier features an adjustable humidistat that maintains a selected humidity level. Water is fed from the tank into the base where it is drawn into a centrifugal fan, which in turn spins the water into a superfine cool mist. This quickly brings moisture levels up for near immediate relief. The clear, one-gallon capacity tank shows the water level and provides up to 24 hours of humidifying on a single filling. The tank bottom is sloped for easy emptying, thus eliminating standing water. A large tank opening and easy grip cap make this unit easy to clean and refill. The daily output is one gallon with a power usage of 30 watts. Operation is whisper quiet and there are no expensive filters to replace. When the water reservoir is almost empty, the unit will automatically shut off. A limited three-year warranty is available.

The Vicks V3500N Single Room Evaporative Humidifier is an improved version of the discontinued Vicks V3500. This version is redesigned to be 20% quieter and now features optional Vicks vapor therapy. The one-gallon capacity supplies up to 24 hours of use on a single fill. The daily output is one gallon and the daily power consumption is 30 watts. The controls are analog and the unit has an automatic shutoff feature for when the reservoir is almost empty. The humidifier offers three speed control output settings, a removable clear tank that shows water level and a large tank opening for easy refills. It comes with a three year limited warranty.

The Vicks V745A Humidifier operates efficiently by boiling the tank water, which is then transferred into the air in the form of heated vapors. When the dry air meshes with the heated vapor in the cooling chamber, it is bacteria-free. This unit has a one-gallon clear tank and provides up to twelve hours of operation on one fill. The tank bottom is sloped for complete emptying. The daily output is two gallons and the power consumption is 260 watts. This quiet machine will not interrupt your sleep and is dishwasher safe.

An automatic shutoff adds extra safety when the water is low. The heater features a non-stick coating for simple cleaning and a power switch with two output settings. A glowing nightlight lights up the room and allows the humidifier to be seen at night. Vicks Cool Mist & Warm Mist Humidifiers come with a limited three-year warranty.

How to Help Your Dog With Kennel Cough

!±8± How to Help Your Dog With Kennel Cough

When I officially met my mother's new baby girl Miniature Schnauzer, Precious, she was one adorable pup! What an angel!

However, before we were due for her 1 week health check up required by our breeder, she came down with a lot of coughing and hacking. She sounded like she had something stuck in her throat that she wanted to cough up.

Poor little Precious has Kennel Cough, and it has gotten to be quite a pain for her, as she will have fits of trouble breathing, hacking and coughing, and is just generally uncomfortable, especially at night.

Kennel Cough is also called tracheobronchitis. It is a virus contracted by dogs, often when they are housed or come into contact with other dogs in a common area, such as the kennels, doggie daycare, groomers, and any other area frequented by a number of dogs. It is highly contagious. Incubation is 8-10 days and then your dog will start to show symptoms.

So, one of Precious' kennel-mates must have been infected with this virus and passed it on to her. It just breaks your heart to see a little puppy suffering so.

It is very important to do something proactive for this infection, especially in small pups and elderly dogs, as it could turn into something worse: Pneumonia!

What Your Vet Is Likely To Do:

The vet gave Precious 2 antibiotics to take at home:

1. Clavamox: A liquid antibiotic that comes with a dropper - 1 cc twice a day

2. Temaril P: A pill that we give her 1/2 of twice a day.

3. She was also given a shot to increase healing time, of which I am unsure of the name.

4. It was recommended by our vet that on top of the liquid vitamins our breeder gives us to give the puppies 2 cc twice a day in dropper format, that we also supplement her with more vitamins to increase her immune system response.

5. It is called Lickables Nutritional Gel - Super Charger. They really like the taste of it (I am told by outside resources that it tastes something like honey) and it boosts their immune system. In fact, the vet gave her a generous amount during this check up.

This stuff is great and we have used it before with our dogs that don't like or will not take vitamins because you an put it on their nose (don't cover their nostrils), or let them lick it off your finger or whatever. Sugar, my mother's dog will NOT take any kind of medication without a lot of trickery on our behalf! This stuff is fantastic for her! The vet says that a dog could live off of this stuff, especially if they are sick and don't want to eat, for a time...It is great for aging dogs as well!

6. We were also instructed to buy a Vicks Vaporizer: The same thing you would use for a baby or yourself when you have a similar infection.

You will also have to get the Vicks Vapo Steam, and the Steam Inhalant for this system. (This has really helped her a lot, especially at night!)

What Else You Can Do At Home:

The whole point here is to boost your terrier's immune system. The things you would do, you can do for your pup as well! Also, boosting any dog's immune system is important for prevention of infections and sicknesses.

We have been supplementing Precious' diet with:

1. Vitamin C: You can get a supplement specifically for dogs, or you can give them chewable human vitamin C tablets (our dogs won't take the human chewables from us, so we have to crush them and put them into their food if we use these).

Obviously, the difference is in the price. You can give them 500 mg 3 times/day (250 mg for tiny terriers). If you get Vitamin C specifically for canines, follow the directions on the bottle.

2. Echinacea: Again, you can get Echinacea especially for dogs, or get the kind for humans (we have been using the human form, as it is cheaper and does the trick).

Follow the instructions on the bottle, but probably reduce the dosage in 1/2 if it is for humans. We just open up the capsules and mix the contents in with the food. For canine specific Echinacea, follow instructions on the bottle.

3. You can also use Colloidial Silver, Goldenseal Herb, etc. etc. The list goes on and on with supplements that can boost immunity!

4. Homemade Chicken Soup:

I am not kidding. If you know how to make chicken soup from scratch at home, this is fantastic for your terrier! Reduce salt levels though.

Who doesn't want Chicken Soup when they feel sick? Your terrier is no exception!

5. Sleep!: Let your pooch sleep as much as they desire! They need it, especially if they are very uncomfortable at night.

Some other things to keep in mind are:

1. Keep your terrier dry! Since we are in fall, it will be raining quite a bit, and winter is around the corner. If they get wet outside, dry them off thoroughly. Don't let them "catch cold". Don't bathe them while they are sick with Kennel Cough if you can at all help it!

2. Love: Give your terrier lots of love! They will need and want it!
